Northwest Health Offers Free Seminar - Understanding the New Blood Pressure Guidelines

Understanding and monitoring your blood pressure is important because it influences nearly every aspect of your health, from heart and kidney function to overall longevity. Recently, the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology released new guidelines that redefine what it means to have healthy blood pressure – and when to take action.

When national guidelines change, it can make it challenging to know what numbers are truly considered healthy, which is why Northwest Health – Porter will offer a one-hour community seminar called, “Heart Health Update: Understanding the New Blood Pressure Guidelines,” for individuals or family members of someone who may benefit from understanding how these changes affect them. The free seminar will take place from noon to 1 p.m., Dec. 3, 2025, at Northwest Health – Porter, Community Room, 85 E. U.S. Highway 6, Valparaiso.

Maya Kommineni, M.D., a cardiologist with Northwest Medical Group in Valparaiso and Portage, will lead the seminar and answer questions from those in attendance. She also will discuss:

• What’s new in the blood pressure guidelines – and why it matters
• The latest target numbers for healthy blood pressure
• How early action can help prevent heart attack, stroke and kidney disease
• Everyday tips to lower your blood pressure naturally

“Blood pressure guidelines evolve as new research helps us better understand heart health,” Dr. Kommineni said. “Even small changes in the target numbers can have a big impact on how we approach prevention and treatment, so it’s important for people to stay informed and talk with their healthcare provider about what these updates mean for them.”

The event is part of the Northwest Health HealthyU series, a wellness program that provides free seminars on various health and wellness topics for the community.
